Matthew Addison has always been able to score. The quick 5-foot-9, 165-pound point guard not only has proven that in regular high school play, but also on the AAU circuit as well. But at his size, Addison knew he had to show he can run a team, so that's the challenge he embarked on his senior season. It's been a success as he and his Killeen Harker Heights teammates prepare for tonight's playoff opener.

"So far, things have been going better than I expected," Addison said. "All the key players on the team are playing well, and it's showing in our stats. Individually, I've had my days, but it's been the best school year I've had and the best basketball year I've had too."

"I'm getting my teammates involved better - I'm averaging probably a good nine assists a game," Addison said. "It used to be I always looked to score, but with the help of the coaches, I'm getting my teammates involved more. I'm also playing better on defense too."

Colleges have wanted to see Addison perform more like a traditional point guard, and they have been watching him this season. Addison notes that he's heard from the likes of Texas Tech, Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston State, and Houston the most in terms of D-I schools, and top JCs such as Howard and Paris have also gotten in contact. With games still left to play, he's keeping things loose.

"I'm open - I'm taking things day by day," Addison said. "Basically anywhere I can get a scholarship would be good for me."

Harker Heights starts the playoffs on Friday night against Austin Westlake at 7:30 pm at Vista Ridge High School, and Addison is ready to hit the court again. "We have the players, so we should be able to pull it through," Addison said. "But they're a good team. So I hope we can get a win. And not to brag, but as a team I think that we could seriously make it to Austin."

Texas Hoops Analysis: Matthew is a super quick and energetic guard who looks to score and create from the point guard position. He has excellent speed in the open court, can get into the lane at anytime and finishes well for a player his size. He can create contact and get to the free throw line, has a nice stroke from the 3point line and can dish off penetration. He is a very pesky defender who gets steals and easy buckets with his quick hands.

5'10" Harker Heights guard, Matthew Addison finished his senior year by producing 22 points, seven assist, and four steals per game. Those numbers earned him a spot on the TABC All-State team, along with All-Region and District Player of the Year. Now all he needed was a college team to play for. Addison found a place that would fit his style and that he feels will give him the best chance to play basketball at the division I level after two years. He decided that Navarro College in Corsicana, TX would be the place for him.

"I felt very comfortable there," said Addison of Navarro College. "They were very interested in me from the start. I fit in well with the students off campus and the basketball is very good over there."

The Bulldogs have been producing guards at all levels and it was a major factor in Addison's decision.

Throughout Addison's senior campaign, he played combo guard but is ready to be primarily a point guard for the Bulldogs. "It won't be too much of an adjustment for me. I will have the green light if I am open, but I will get my teammates involved and playing hard. I just want to win."

After a down year, the Bulldogs will look towards Addison to produce. "The coaches expect me to be an immediate impact, and so do I. The big man that they have coming in with me will make us better."

Addison has the right mind set about attending a junior college, and Navarro has what he needs to be successful in the classroom. "I will get a chance to graduate in two years and become a better ball player. They also have tutors for anybody that needs them. I want to study Kinesiology. I really want to coach. I know I made the right decision."

Addison added that he coaches a little league team on the court that has won back to back titles.

Texas Hoops Analysis: MATT is an extremely quick, high energy player that can break down the defense at any time. He has 3 point range, is a very good finisher in the lane, and can create his own shot. He is a good passer and has quick hands on defense for easy steals.
